Obsessive-compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas (obsession) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions).

The repetitive behaviors, such as hand washing, checking on things or cleaning, can significantly interfere with a person’s daily activities and social interactions.Not performing the behaviors commonly causes great distress. And the distress caused by these intrusive thoughts cannot be resolved by logic or reasoning.

Though OCD is not life threatening; it severely affects the quality of life. Patient cannot focus of important tasks. Also, they can cause further complications e.g. habits like recurrent hand washing or cleaning causes eczema or skin infections etc.

Obsessions :

Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that cause distressing emotions such as anxiety or disgust.Typical obsessions:

  1. Fear of getting contaminated by people or the environment
  2. Disturbing sexual thoughts or images
  3. Fear of criticism or insults
  4. Extreme concern with order, symmetry, or precision
  5. Fear of losing or discarding something important
Compulsion:

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession. A constant repetition of rituals may fill the day, making a normal routine impossible.

  1. Excessive hand washing, showering, brushing teeth, or toileting
  2. Repeated cleaning of household objects
  3. Ordering or arranging things in a particular way
  4. Repeatedly checking locks, switches, or appliances
  5. Constantly seeking approval or reassurance
  6. Repeated counting to a certain number
Complications:
  1. Suicidal thoughts and behavior
  2. Alcohol or substance abuse
  3. Other anxiety disorders
  4. Depression
  5. Eating disorders
  6. Contact dermatitis from frequent hand washing
  7. Inability to attend work or school
  8. Troubled relationships
  9. Overall poor quality of life
