Hemorrhoids or Piles
Inflammation or swelling of blood vessels in the anus and rectum is known as piles or hemorrhoids. These enlarged vessels can develop inside the rectum or around the skin of the anal opening.
There may be cases where piles can not exhibit symptoms and it gets hard for a person to realize they have piles. But the enlarged blood vessels may lead to bleeding or pain while passing stool, thus revealing the symptoms of piles. This can be found mainly in people between the age group of 45-65. They usually get better on their own without any treatment but may return after some time as well.
Causes
The root cause of piles or hemorrhoids is still not known but there may be several factors relating to this. Piles create pressure in the blood vessels which are in the anus and rectum of a person causing the blood vessels to swell.
There are other factors related to the cause of piles in a person which include:
An overweight person is more likely to be prone to hemorrhoids as obesity is already creating much pressure on the blood vessels. Further increase in pressure is caused by piles.
As a person ages, blood vessels in the body keep going weaker. Piles are found to be common in old age.
A person having a family history of piles is likely to have piles at later ages. Genes play an important role in passing diseases to blood relatives.
having a baby in the womb exert pressure on the abdominal muscles and this may lead to pressure on blood vessels in the pelvic area.
lifting heavy weights frequently is found to be another underlying reason for the piles to happen. Lifting heavily can result in pressure on the blood vessels in the abdominal area.
sickness like prolonged coughing is known to create pressure in the abdomen area of the sick person, and this pressure is likely to cause hemorrhoid-like symptoms in the body.
squats are one of the cardiovascular exercises to strengthen the heart muscles. However, squatting for longer and frequently squatting while sitting down can create pressure on the blood vessels in the pelvic area.
watery or hard bowel movements that are harder on the blood vessels of the anus and rectum are yet another cause of piles.
A fatty liver or an unhealthy liver can cause an accumulation of fluid in the abdomen resulting in pressure on the blood vessels in the anus and rectum, thus causing piles.
Although this is a rare disease to happen if a person has rectal cancer, the risk of having piles becomes twice as high for them.
What are the symptoms of piles?
Piles or hemorrhoids may not show up with symptoms at all. The person having hemorrhoids may not even have any difficulty in passing defecates. There are different symptoms for a person with piles. There may be more than one symptom related to the piles.
A person having piles is most likely to experience pain in the anus or rectum which increases on straining while stooling.
In some cases, there can be some bleeding from the anus along with severe pain while defecating.
During the physical examination, a person having piles may seem to have blood vessels that can be bulging through the anus due to the inflammation caused by the pressure on vessels.
Another common symptom for piles is that there is itching that may be severe or mild around the anal opening. However, itching can be a symptom of other infections as well and not piles.
There have been few cases where clotting may form within the bulging blood vessels. This case is known as thrombosed piles which are severely painful.
In case one or more than one symptoms are found in the person, consulting a doctor becomes urgent for such a person. A pile can be torn due to extra pressure and left untreated, thus creating heavy blood loss for the patient.
Types of piles
According to the symptoms that are found, piles are categorized into three types.
1.External Hemorrhoids: These are found under the skin around the anus. Signs and symptoms might include:
- Frequent itching or irritation in the anal region
- Mild Pain or discomfort while sitting or squatting
- Swelling is very common around the anus area
- There may be some bleeding as well
- Internal Hemorrhoids: these piles are painless and may not be found. However, there may be some bleeding during bowel movements.
