About Veins in the Legs
There are two main systems of veins in the legs:
- Deep veins: The leg muscles squeeze these veins during walking, carrying most of the blood back up to the heart.
- Superficial veins: These occur under the skin and can form varicose veins.
All veins have one-way valves to ensure blood flows toward the heart. When these valves fail, blood can flow back down the veins, increasing pressure while standing. This excess pressure causes the veins to widen and prevents them from closing properly, allowing blood to flow backward and resulting in varicose veins.
