Types of Kidney Stones

• Calcium Oxalate: The most common type of kidney stone is created when calcium combines with oxalate in the urine.
• Uric Acid: Foods such as organ meats and shellfish have high concentrations of a natural chemical compound known as purines. High purine intake may lead to stone formation.
• Struvite: These stones are less common and are caused by infections in the upper urinary tract.
• Cystine: These stones are rare.

Risk Factors

• Not drinking enough water each day can increase your risk of kidney stones.
• Certain diets, such as a diet that’s high in protein, sodium (salt), and sugar may increase your risk of some types of kidney stones.
• Digestive diseases and surgery.
• Other medical conditions such as renal tubular acidosis, cystinuria, hyperparathyroidism, and repeated urinary tract infections also can increase your risk of kidney stones.

Signs

• Red or brown urine.
• Cloudy or foul-smelling urine.
• A persistent need to urinate, urinating more often than usual or urinating in small amounts.
