Scizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that interferes with a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions and relate to others. It is a complex, long-term medical illness. 

Due to complexity of schizophrenia there are misconceptions about the disease. Schizophrenia does not mean split personality or multiple-personality.Most people with schizophrenia are not aggressive, and are more likely to be victims of violence rather than perpetrators. Schizophrenic people are commonly exploited and victimized by violent crime as part of a broader dynamic of social exclusion.

There is no cure for schizophrenia, but it can be treated and managed in several ways. People with schizophrenia can live productive and fulfilling life with help and support of friends & family.

Causes:
  1. Schizophrenia isn’t caused by just one genetic variation, but a complex interplay of genetics and environmental influences. Heredity does play a strong role. So family history of schizophrenia is one of causes.
  2. Exposure to viruses or malnutrition before birth, particularly in the first and second trimesters has been shown to increase the risk of schizophrenia.
  3. Brain chemistry. Problems with certain brain chemicals, including neurotransmitters called dopamine and glutamate, may contribute to schizophrenia.
  4. Substance use. Some studies have suggested that taking mind-altering drugs during teen years and young adulthood can increase the risk of schizophrenia
Symptoms:
  1. Delusions: These are false, mixed, and sometimes strange beliefs that aren’t based in reality and that the person refuses to give up, even when shown the facts.
  2. Hallucinations: hearing, seeing or feeling things that are not there
  3. Catatonia: In this condition, the person may stop speaking, and their body may be fixed in a single position for a very long time.
  4. Talking in sentences that don’t make sense or using nonsense words, making it difficult for the person to communicate or hold a conversation
  5. Shifting quickly from one thought to the next without obvious or logical connections between them.Writing excessively but without meaning.
  6. Unbale to understand information and using it to make decisions. Difficulty in concentrating and focusing on tasks.Forgetting or losing things.
  7. Repeating movements or gestures, like pacing or walking in circles
  8. Lack of emotion or a limited range of emotions
  9. Withdrawal from family, friends, and social activities
  10. Less energy. Constant desire to lie down.
  11. Lack of motivation.Loss of pleasure or interest in life.
  12. Poor hygiene and grooming habits.
Coping and Support:
Coping with a mental disorder as serious as schizophrenia can be challenging, both for the person with the condition and for friends and family. Here are some ways to cope:
  1. Learn about schizophrenia. Education about the disorder can help the person with schizophrenia understand the importance of sticking to the treatment plan. Education can help friends and family understand the disorder and be more compassionate with the person who has it.
  2. Stay focused on goals. Managing schizophrenia is an ongoing process. Keeping treatment goals in mind can help the person with schizophrenia stay motivated. Help your loved one remember to take responsibility for managing the disorder and working toward goals.
  3. Avoid alcohol and drug use. Using alcohol, nicotine or recreational drugs can make it difficult to treat schizophrenia

Ideas crowd upon each other.Excessive loquacity; exuberance of spirits. Time seems too long; seconds seem ages; a few rods an immense distance. Constantly theorizing. Anxious depression; constant fear of becoming insane. \
