Epilepsy (Seizures/Convulsions)

This is a neurological disorder of the central nervous system leading to a number of other different problems. This can cause recurrent epileptic seizures leading to periods of patches of time where a person does not remember things and unusual or very different than normal behaviour is observed.
The symptoms of epilepsy can vary vastly from person to person. While one might lose all sense of surrounding and just keep quiet and not respond to anything, others might become physically aggressive towards themselves or even people around them.
Usually, there must be episodes of two seizures for a person to be diagnosed with epilepsy. That is when the treatment is begun.

Symptoms

This is a very much dramatic and scary symptom of epilepsy. A person falls unconscious completely out of the blue.

These are when a person is unable to remember what happened within a span of a particular period of time.

These psychological symptoms are very usual to occur since the person sometimes suddenly becomes aware of the things around them and does not gather what is happening around them.

Sometimes, when asked something, the person remains totally oblivious to the question and remains ignorant of the movements and conversations happening in their surroundings.

As mentioned previously, there are patches of intervals of time where the person cannot remember a thing. But as it happens, sometimes they can remember a few things but are unable to place them together. The memories do not make sense and are very confusing for them.

This usually includes hands and legs. Seizure is characterized by the aggressive jerking of hands and legs by an epileptic person. This further puts the person at risk factors of injury and prolonged deprivation of oxygen in the body.

This might occur in the neck, hands or legs.

Not every person going through epilepsy may show the same symptoms, and not even all of the ones mentioned above. It varies from person to person. When a person has an episode of epilepsy, those symptoms are usually the ones to carry out throughout. It is very rare for symptoms to change or add to the original ones. A person with epilepsy also has a very small chance of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).

Focal Seizures

Focal onset seizures are known for affecting only one part of the brain. They are characterized by the following two categories –

Simple Focal Seizures- This category includes the inability to respond when asked about anything. The person is aware of the surroundings and if they are being talked to but are unable to respond, leading to jerking movement of the body. These play a huge role in altering your emotions and all your bodily senses like taste, smell, hearing, speaking and feeling.

Complex Focal Seizures- These usually have a time span of up to 2 minutes. More than that are very rare. This just feels like it has put a person into oblivion, and they stare point-blankly, focusing on a particular object like a wall. This is not a complete unconsciousness but and altered one nevertheless.

There exist six types of generalized seizures.

Causes

  • While there can be a large number of causes for epilepsy, the only one that is known for sure is some kind of injury to the brain.
  • Diseases like AIDS or meningitis can also be considered a cause of epilepsy.
  • Prenatal injury- We are all aware that how delicate babies are. If any factor before birth, like poor nutrition to the mother or oxygen deficiency might, occurs, there is a chance that the baby might later suffer from epilepsy.
  • Head trauma or any other kind of injury to the brain is one of the major causes of epilepsy.
  • Developmental disorders in children might lead to this later.

As per the latest research on the topic, motor conflict might also be the cause. It is a feeling of being stuck and unable to move. This might happen to a fetus since it has no means of escape. Something might threaten the fetus, like some kind of voice or yelling.

There is also a condition known as falling conflict, where there lives a fear in a person’s mind of not only themselves or even someone else falling down on the ground. This might develop a permanent fear and thus make them react in the same way.
